Hartwick Residence addition and remodel…

The unusual footprint of this 1300 square foot addition to a small mid-century house maximizes the area allowed by city-required setbacks. The addition provides a large studio and installation space for the owner, an artist, as well as additional living space.

For the working studio, the interior finishes are left raw, with smooth concrete floors and exposed ceiling framing. The double-height studio features an oversized industrial roll-up door, opening on to the driveway, which permits installation of large art pieces and introducing ample natural light.

Inside, the studio can be separated from the living spaces by closing a large bi-fold door. Nestled into the sloping site, the rear portions of the addition contain a den and home office, with a complete bedroom suite on the second floor.
